TO MY DEAR CIVILIANS, WITH LOVE by Rebecca Lord and Brian Whitney

PUBLISHER: BearManor Media, 4/2016
GENRE: Nonfiction/Memoir
FILMOGRAPHY: link

PURCHASE: link
MY GRADE: B

FROM PUBLISHER: Now you're in for it! Join world famous film star Rebecca Lord as she takes you into the strange and hilarious world of adult films. Rebecca started in the business when she was a very young woman in France, but soon became well known in the industry and moved to America to further her career. While in the U.S., she became a huge star, and made a lot of friendships with some famous stars on the way, before returning to Europe where she continues to direct movies. This book is full of amazing, sexy and too-funny stories that will have you laughing out loud!

Rebecca Lord is a world famous adult film star and a member of the AVN Hall of Fame. Brian Whitney is the author or co-author of 7 books, including an autobiography of Porsche Lynn and the novel Raping the Gods.

MY THOUGHTS: This could have been better. She didn't give any background on herself at all other than she went to Catholic school and got into porn when she was 20. No mention of her parents or siblings, other than to say her niece became an orphan. I don't feel as if I got to know her at all. She didn't even say what she likes to do in her spare time. She seems funny and likeable and doesn't take herself too seriously. She's been married to the same man since her early 20's, and she's 44 now. She did say she likes to keep some things private so I guess that's why there's not much about her pre-porn life in here.

Her memoir was all about her life in the porn industry, first as an actor, then as director/producer. When she came here she didn't speak a word of English. An interesting little bit is she helped teach herself English by watching television, including the O.J. Simpson trial, with closed captioning turned on so she could see the written word.

I wanted something deeper in this memoir. This was a little too lighthearted.

I reviewed an adult film she was in here.

INSIDE SEKA: THE PLATINUM PRINCESS OF PORN by Seka with Kerry Zukus

PUBLISHING INFO: BearManor Media, 9/2013
GENRE: Autobiography
PURCHASE: link
OFFICIAL SITE: link
MY GRADE: A

FROM PUBLISHER: Seka—The Platinum Princess, the Marilyn Monroe of Porn, the queen of XXX cinema’s Golden Age, and John Holmes’ favorite leading lady. Seka is a legendary performer in the annals of adult cinema, and many would say the greatest. Seka’s name was so big in XXX that her name above the title was not enough—her name had to be in the title!

Seka’s real life story, though, is as enigmatic as her screen persona. She was never a victim—on-screen or off. This is no tale of remorse, abuse, or self-destructive behavior. Seka was post-feminist before the term was born. Inside Seka is the story of a survivor, a trailblazer, and an icon—still one of the most popular and famous porn stars ever; the last of the natural beauties.

MY THOUGHTS: Seka (Dorothiea 'Dottie' Hundley) is very honest and blunt. She's not very humble and is a touch arrogant when it comes to her looks and popularity. Despite that I like her a lot. She was a true porn star in the seventies through the mid-80's. Her career came to a halt when AIDS came on the scene heavily. She wanted to use condoms but the production companies didn't want to so she left but ended up making a few more films after that. She was never very responsible with her finances.

Her life has been pretty interesting. I got a bit tired of hearing about the nonporn celebrities she's met over the years. She's childless and has been happily married to Carl, husband number two, since the 2000's. She didn't mentioned why she never had kids. Did she just never want any or did she never find the right man to settle down with? She didn't say.

There are many black and white photos peppered throughout the book including a few topless ones. Thankfully she never got implants. She did have three breast lifts.

She did an interview to promote her book in September 2013. There's more info about her films here.

I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

HOW TO MAKE LOVE LIKE A PORN STAR: A CAUTIONARY TALE by Jenna Jameson with Neil Strauss

PUBLISHING INFO: It Books, 2010
ISBN: 9780060539108, paperback
ORIGINAL PUB: Regan Books, 2004, hardcover
ISBN: 9780060539092
GENRE: Nonfiction/Memoir
HER SITE: link
MY GRADE: A

FROM PUBLISHER: In the underbelly of Las Vegas, a cesspool of warring biker gangs and seedy strip clubs, gawky, brace-faced Jenna Massoli was transformed into the bombshell Jenna Jameson. Today, Jenna is the biggest star in the history of adult movies, consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful women alive. But behind the glamour and the meteoric rise to fame was a path paved with tragedy and heartbreak. As a teenager—drawn into a dark and chaotic world where rape, abuse, and murder were commonplace—Jenna began her rapid downward spiral of addiction and degradation . . . while at the same time becoming the porn world's biggest crossover success story.

Her intimate memoir, How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, is a shocking sexual history, an insider's guide to the secret workings of the billion-dollar adult film industry, and a gripping thriller that probes deeply into Jenna's dark past. Mix in hilarious anecdotes, adrenaline-pumping triumphs, and photos from Jenna's private collection, and you have a tell-all autobiography unlike any other.

MY THOUGHTS: I've always had a real hard time reviewing biographies/memoirs because I'm terrible at expressing myself. These books are so different than novels. All I can say is that I've known of Jenna since the late 90's when I used to see her on The Howard Stern Show (when his morning radio show was filmed and aired on CBS on Saturday nights), when he had one.

I've always liked her. Her life hasn't been easy despite the fact she's wealthy and the most famous porn star of all-time. She's had a drug problem since she was seventeen and I don't think she'll ever be free of them. She's brutally honest and her words are graphic. She's left no stone unturned, even telling about several rapes when she was a teen.

I loved the book and all the photos in it. It was first published nine years ago and needs to be updated. So much as gone on since, like another divorce and she's become the mother of twins and has had cosmetic surgery on her face and her ass has mysteriously gotten much bigger.

Up and Cummers 11, her first m/f adult film scene from 1994, when she was not quite twenty, and still had natural breasts. She'd only done one sex scene, f/f, before this. This was the last adult scene before she got implants. Her scene is with Randy West. Here's the cover.

E! True Hollywood Story, from 2003. This is a two hour biography that is really worth watching. Originally aired on the American cable network E! in late 2003.

A rare old video of her when she was 20, in 1994, the year she got implants (shortly after her birthday).

I AM JENNIE by Jennie Ketcham, Former Adult Actor Penny Flame

Pub. Info: Gallery Books, 7/2012, Hardcover
Genre: Memoir/Autobiography
My Grade: A-

From Publisher: Drunk and high, holed up in a hotel room with a beautiful blonde she barely knew, Jennie Ketcham was thirty-six hours away from entering rehab. Her on-camera alter ego, Penny Flame, was a rising star. Her personal life, however, had been getting worse for years and finally hit an all-time low.

Guys are gonna want one thing from you. To Jennie’s young ears, her father’s advice meant one thing: You can use your sexuality to control men. Life was imploding around her: her parents’ divorce, their spiraling addictions, her deteriorating relationships with them. She lost her virginity at thirteen and began a game of initiating boys her age into manhood. For the fleeting moments she spent in bed with them, she got to be the center of attention.

Eventually, Jennie found porn—that enticing world of immediate gratification, endless drugs, and seemingly endless money—and became Penny Flame. Divorced from her feelings, tempted into a lifestyle she couldn’t afford, financially or emotionally, she entered Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew to boost her career. But when Dr. Drew and his staff insisted she go by her real name, the once indestructible walls she had built around herself began to burn down.

Two stories make up this direct and disarming memoir: that of a troubled girl desperately fleeing intimacy and herself, and that of a woman courageously breaking down emotional barriers to build a new life. Many will recognize Jennie’s struggles: confusing sex with self-worth, addiction with love, detachment with strength. Ultimately, I Am Jennie is a tale of a woman who considers herself a work in progress but who finally understands that the only person she can truly afford to be is herself.

MY THOUGHTS: I was excited to see that Jennie had written a book. I'd first heard of her when she was on VH1's Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew, then its spinoff, Sober House. I've since seen one of her films (great scene in Reform School Girls, by the way!).

I really appreciate when adult actors tell us their stories. I don't understand what lead Jennie into becoming a promiscuous teenager or drug abuser. I never felt like her home life was bad and would like to understand that better. I don't see how her parents unhappy marriage could have sent her down a dangerous path.

She never discussed when she realized she was bisexual, how she felt about it nor did she mention if she ever discussed with a therapist being raped on a train. She also didn't mention if she thought doing porn was having some impact on her drug use.

The best part of the book was near the end when she met with an ex-boyfriend to apologize to him for her behavior while they were dating. That part really touched me. The funniest part was when she was talking with fellow actor and agent (?) Ben English and answered him in a faux British accent to mimic his.

The comment from her father in the synopsis about guys only wanting one thing from her isn't in full context. He said it to her because she was dressed in a short skirt when she was twelve or thirteen. He was letting her know that if she dressed like that, boys would only want one thing.

She's very honest and explicit and seems to have a great personality. The book was an interesting read and I'd recommend it to anyone who has a interest in the adult films. I happen to enjoy watching porn (I have plenty of it) but I'm happy she got out of the industry since she felt it wasn't the place for her any longer. According to her blog, Becoming Jennie, she seems to be doing fine and I wish her the best.

JOHN HOLMES: A LIFE MEASURED IN INCHES by Jennifer Sugar and Jill C. Nelson

PUBLISHER: BearManor Media, 8/2008
GENRE: Nonfiction/Biography
PURCHASE: link
MY GRADE: A-

FROM PUBLISHER: Most people might, understandably, predict that the world's first porn star was a woman, but they would be wrong. John Curtis Holmes was just a simple country boy from Ohio when he moved to California in 1964. It was the infancy of hardcore, so in Holmes' wildest dreams, he could not have predicted the turbulent ride on which he had embarked by publicizing his private parts. With the fame he achieved by playing his most famous character - a gun toting detective named Johnny Wadd - came money.

Holmes was pleased to spend it on his wife and mistresses, but soon was in over his head after he became addicted to cocaine. Unfortunately for Holmes, in the years that followed, his addiction led him into several desperate choices - including setting up a robbery at the home of Ed Nash, a powerful L.A. nightclub owner. The robbery resulted in one of the most gruesome, unsolved, multiple-murders in Hollywood history. Amazingly, before his untimely death in 1988, Holmes regained his momentum, remarried and rebuilt his life and career. However, the grave consequences of his addiction, his association with the Wonderland murders, and his AIDS-related death made him an infamous figure in pop culture. Digging past the stigmas, John Holmes: A Life Measured in Inches - the first biography about John C. Holmes - unearths the human being behind the penis and proves that there was more to him than could be measured in inches.

This biography includes material from the authors' new interviews with: Laurie Holmes, Bill Amerson, Bob Chinn, Julia St. Vincent, Detective Tom Lange, Detective Frank Tomlinson, Paul Thomas, Ron Jeremy, Seka, Marilyn Chambers, Candida Royalle, Rhonda Jo Petty, Dr. Sharon Mitchell, Bill Margold, and many others! Also included is additional source material containing extensive interviews with: Sharon Holmes, Dawn Schiller, Dr. Vonda Pelto, Ph.D., and L.A. Times film critic, Kenneth Turan. With 114 reviews of John's most notable feature films, 86 loops synopses, 3 photos sections with rare nudes, and a 21 page comprehensive filmography.

MY THOUGHTS: This is a large, heavy paperback that is almost 600 pages long and weighs about 1 1/2 pounds. It contains many black and white photographs of John and his co-workers along with a lot of photos that were taken from his adult films. There are a couple nudes of just John by himself with his 'member' on full display.

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was well put together. I didn't know much of him before reading this, except that he was a porn star, famous because of the size of his penis (there are more than a few photos of it in this book), and that he'd died from an AIDS related illness. The highlight of the book was hearing from his ex-wife, Sharon. I'd been curious about her since hearing of her in another book and was more than delighted that this book included many, many excerpts that she'd given to others in the past. My second favorite part was reading all the interviews from people who knew him, including other porn actors, some of which I've seen in action before or had heard of.

This was really just a sad story of a sex addicted man (a real whoremonger) who later became addicted to drugs. What some think may have caused him to get HIV is having sex with a male porn actor who died from AIDS three years later, which was the same year, 1986, that John was diagnosed with HIV. Personally, I think that if John had sex with a gay man on-screen, for pay, what in the world makes people think he wasn't doing it in private off-screen? I feel he was bi-sexual and wasn't comfortable with it, at least with people knowing about it, so he didn't let anyone know, including the people he was close to. So really, if indeed he did have sex with other gay men, he could have contracted HIV from any one of them.

My two complaints about this book is that I'd like to have heard from his mother and siblings about what they thought of him becoming an adult actor and I wanted to hear more about his abusive childhood. It was only mentioned that he had an abusive step-father. But most off all, I really wanted/want to know more about something that a man named Mike Sager said. He wrote an article about John in Rolling Stone magazine in 1988 though he'd never met John. Here's the quote from Mike that is in the book, "The main explanation was- he wasn't gay, but he did at a time, make money for sex- there were wealthy men that would pay to be with him." I want to know more about that. Who are these men and who knew about them? Have any of them ever been interviewed anywhere?

At the front of the book is a list of some of the people who were interviewed for the book or had been interviewed about John for other films and book publications. That is very handy. I have that section marked with a tab so I can filp to it faster when I need to. Pages 437-581 is a detailed filmography of John's adult films and there are some photos, some with nudity, throughout that section. I really like that the authors thought to add a filmography. It was a nice, helpful touch that I appreciate.

To read more, please visit the author's website. There you'll find photos, some of which weren't in the book and can only be found online.

Edit- The second edition was published in 2011 and is updated with new info and more photos.
