Genre: Young Adult Historical Romance
Setting: England, 1584
Series? Lacey Chronicles, book 2
My Grade: B
From Publisher: When beautiful Lady Jane Rievaulx begins her service to the Queen at Richmond Palace, she is thrilled to see the court’s newest arrival . . . Master James Lacey.
No matter that Jane was previously courted by the eldest Lacey brother — James is the one who has won her heart. For his part, James cannot deny his fascination with Jane; his plans, however, do not allow for love. He is about to set sail on a treacherous journey to the Americas, seeking absolution for what he sees as past sins. But when Jane is forced into a terrible situation by her own family, only one man can save her. Will Master James return to his lady before it’s too late?
MY THOUGHTS: We first met the heroine, Jane, in the previous book. Now she’s eighteen and widowed. Her much older stepsons are very jealous of the money and property that she’s inherited from their father. They’re out to make her life a living hell. To make matters worse, her own father is a mean man who’s trying to dictate her life and has made awful threats to her.
Her first encounter with James didn’t got so well. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder. He’s scarred emotionally fromthe horrors of war, the things he’s seen and done. There’s also a new addition to James’s family by way of a new sibling.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed in this second installment. I just didn’t find it paticularly interesting, especially Jane.
I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
