THINGS I'VE MADE

FLUFFERNUTTER CAKE:
This is a peanut butter cake with marshmallow cream in the batter. I used melted mini marshmallows and stirred them in. I couldn't really taste the marshmallow so perhaps next time I'll use a little more of them and less brown sugar. Though it had salt in it from the self-rising flour it needed more. Next time I'll add a big pinch. On this one too I used fudge frosting. These took 1:10 each.

DEVIL'S FOOD: I followed the recipe except I used regular milk in place of buttermilk. As per directions I baked each cake separately and it took just 1:20 each in my 700 watt microwave. Cakes baked up as usual with a domed top. I used my own recipe for fudge frosting on these, topped each with toasted pecans and vanilla ice cream.

CHOCOLATE MAYONNAISE CAKE: Mayo is made mostly from egg yolk and oil so those are omitted from this recipe. Don't worry- you can't taste any lemon/vinegar from the mayo. This recipe makes just one cake so I doubled the recipe and I've made it twice. Both times the cakes were dense and fudge-like, sort of like a fudge brownie versus a cake-like one, and didn't bake up as high as the non mayo cakes. They were salty too from the mayo and self-rising flour, which has salt in it already. Next time I'm going to use homemade self-rising flour without salt added. I used the same homemade fudge frosting, pecans, and ice cream. These took about 1:25 each.

MY THOUGHTS: This is a great book. I usually bake half of a cake, which makes a 9" round or up to 12 cupcakes, but sometimes that's too much. Each recipe in this book makes two mug cakes but a couple make just one. You're supposed to mix the cakes up in a mug but there really isn't room for that. I used a small mixing bowl. Every cake I made I used these exact bowls. They're 4 3/4" W x 2 1/8" D. You'll get two cakes if using a bowl that size. If using smaller bowls, you'll need at least three of them. Like the author says in the book, no matter what size mug or bowl you use fill it only halfway because the cakes bake up high! I made all these cakes in a 700 watt microwave.

Most recipes in here use self-rising flour but the author says you can make your own using 3/4 t. baking powder per 1 c. all-purpose flour. I did that for the first two cakes I made because I didn't have any self-rising. If making your own self-rising, don't add salt to the flour. Just make sure to add a big pinch of salt to the recipe.

There are so many more I want and plan to make but time won't allow for it right now. More I'm going to try are: Apple-Rosemary, PB and J, Black Forest, Black Cherry, Deep Dark Chocolate, Chocolate Turtle, Caramel Apple, just to name a few!

I think one egg may be too much for two smaller cakes so I'm going to try using just an egg white or yolk per two cakes and see how that goes.

This book is perfect for someone who lives alone and doesn't want to make a big cake or has other people in the house who aren't into sweets so they need something smaller just for themselves. Most of the cake images on the cover aren't in the book so I'm not sure which cakes they are.

ANDREA AT THE CENTER by J.P. Kansas

PUBLISHER: Pink Flamingo, 4/2013
ORIGINAL PUB: Masquerade, 1994
GENRE: Contemporary Erotica
FORMAT: Paperback and E-book
PURCHASE: link
MY GRADE: D

SYNOPSIS: Young and beautiful Andrea is, without warning, whisked away to a secret location, where a mysterious group devotes itself to the pursuit of sexual enlightenment through the use of many sensual techniques. Gradually, she's introduced to the ways of the Center by the people that gladly occupy it. Her sense of self and her understanding of sexuality are profoundly challenged, leading her to a new understanding of herself and the deepest sexual satisfaction.

Andrea at the Center, previously published by Masquerade in the 90's, has been fully revised with titillating updates for our Pink Flamingo readers! J.P. Kansas will thrill you with his stunning tale of straight, lesbian and gay sex, bondage, exhibitionism and all sorts of sex toys and dolls! The excitement does not stop there, however. Andrea's experiences are sure to arouse every fetish; from spanking and collars to threesomes and voyeurism. Andrea at the Center has everything you want in an erotic novel and more!

MY THOUGHTS: I love erotica. The filthier the better. I don't like 'sexy', watered down R-rated sex scenes. I want them XXX. This book had that but that's all it had. I love erotic storylines where the woman is taken, willingly or not, to, and becomes part of, a secret underground sexual society. The goings-on here were a mess and unbelievable. It was just a bunch of sometimes crazy sex scenes put together just to see how many could fit into the book.

Though this book ran the gamut as far as sexual escapades go some were just too strange and were a turn-off. Examples: giving oral sex to someone who's on her period and you receiving it while on it, urinating in someone's mouth and they into yours, oral sex with a life-like bendable mannequin of yourself, ect. The most absurd scene was Andrea's anal penetration with a bar of soap. WTF? That entire bar would have shot right into her rectum and she'd have been at the emergency room. The worst part of all is that the overwhelming majority of sex in this book is lesbian, which bores me to death, and it's so repetitive, as were her countless orgasms, I couldn't wait for the story to end. I love penis and there wasn't nearly enough of 'em in this book which is a real disappointment. This is the kind of story/subject matter that I can read quickly because I'm really interested in it but because of the repetitiveness it felt like I'd been reading it for two weeks with no end in sight. When I was less than halfway though the book I realized that the rest of the book was just going to be more of the exact same things I'd already read about.

This was first published in 1994 but some of the terminology made it seem like it was written twenty years earlier, with the constant use of the word 'terrific' and phrase 'make love'. It isn't 'making love' when you aren't in love with them and especially when the sex is with someone you've just met. No one says that anymore.

With books of all genres you need some background information on main characters. We didn't get any with Andrea. We know nothing about her background except she's engaged to Michael. How she ended up at the Center is not believable and how she returned home isn't either. We were left to decide for ourselves if her three months or so at the Center was all a dream.

The in-print print version, pictured above, seems to be available through the publisher only and has no ISBN.

S.E.C.R.E.T. by L. Marie Adeline

PUBLISHER: Broadway Books, 4/2013
GENRE: Contemporary Erotica
SETTING: Louisiana, USA
SERIES: book 1
NARRATION: First person
AUTHOR SITE: link
GRADE: C

SYNOPSIS: Cassie Robichaud’s life is filled with regret and loneliness after the sudden death of her husband. She waits tables at the rundown Café Rose in New Orleans, and every night she heads home to her solitary one-bedroom apartment. But when she discovers a notebook left behind by a mysterious woman at the café, Cassie’s world is forever changed.

The notebook’s stunningly explicit confessions shock and fascinate Cassie, and eventually lead her to S∙E∙C∙R∙E∙T, an underground society dedicated to helping women realize their wildest, most intimate sexual fantasies.

MY THOUGHTS: Cassie is a thirty-four year old widow. Her husband was a sometimes abusive alcoholic who died almost four years ago. She hasn't had sex since before he died. Their relationship was bad, they'd stopped having sex and she wasn't sad when he died accidentally. She'd been married for fourteen years and her husband was the only lover she'd had. She's very lonely, works most of the time so when the opportunity to be part of this one year secret 'experiment' presents itself it didn't take her long to become part of it. I assume the woman who recruited her at the restaurant thought she was attractive.

I was disappointed that the sex scenes didn't have more graphic language. I think the P word may have been used once or twice early on. The sex scenes were pretty lackluster and not exciting to me and were pretty quick. During the one and only anal sex scene the word 'anal' or 'ass' wasn't even used. I think the author was clearly going for less graphic, perhaps 'sophisticated' erotica. Whenever a man's age was given it was to say he was a little younger than her, which is a turn off for me. I don't like stories of any kind featuring younger men with older women. Not usually, anyway.

Outside of her sexual encounters the storyline was pretty boring, especially the charity stuff. There wasn't much use for her coworker, Tracina, in the story, except to involve her with their boss, Will Foret, in something together near the end. That was just something conveniently thrown in to allow Cassie to continue on with her journey through S.E.C.R.E.T. Just when she and Will had gotten close emotionally something happened to blow it. I don't know why they hadn't dated before now since she's worked for him for several years and there's always been an attraction between them. I did like his jealousy when she went out with someone he knew.

We didn't get much backstory on Cassie. We only know she's from Michigan and was married her whole adult life to the same man, Scott. Nothing at all about her childhood. Physically, we only know she's got brown hair and is a C cup.

Now for a few things that irritated me. The author is Canadian. She clearly loves the French. Cassie's last name is French, the story takes place in the French part of Louisiana, and Cassie wins a ski trip to Canada (what a random thing to throw in) and the ski instructor just happens to have a bit of a French accent. The story should have just taken place in Canada.

If you're into mild erotica, meaning it's not too descriptive or hardcore, you may want to try this series. If you're like me and like your erotica very graphic, like real porn, skip this. The sequel is due out in October.

Here's some info on what the acronym means:

Safe, in that the participant feels no danger.
Erotic, in that the fantasy is sexual in nature, not just imaginary.
Compelling, in that the participant truly wants to complete the fantasy.
Romantic, in that the participant feels wanted and desired.
Ecstatic, in that the participant experiences joy in the act.
Transformative, in that something in the participant changes in a fundamental way.

THE DUCHESS HUNT by Jennifer Haymore

PUBLISHER: Forever, 6/2013
GENRE: Historical Romance
SETTING: England, 1812
SERIES: House of Trent, book 1
AUTHOR SITE: link
MY GRADE: B

SYNOSPIS: Simon Hawkins, duke of Trent, is no stranger to scandal. Rumors and innuendo have darkened the House of Trent for decades, and it has fallen to Simon to restore his tattered family name. He lives by a strict code of honor, but when he is called home to investigate his mother's disappearance, the distinguished duke will tangle with temptation. For there waits the only woman he has ever loved-and the last woman he should desire .

Sarah Osborne has spent her life dreaming of Simon's touch. But dukes do not long for lady's maids-or so Sarah believes, until a stolen kiss sparks a passion that could be her ultimate undoing. As the couple begins a forbidden romance, a cunning enemy plots to destroy the duke and everything he loves. Now, caught in a blackmailer's web, Simon faces an agonizing choice: sacrifice his family's future or break Sarah's heart.

MY THOUGHTS: I liked this better than I thought I would. I think the twenty page prologue was too long and a bit silly but I understand the author's intent. Sarah, who's about twenty-four and has black hair, blue eyes, and Simon, twenty-nine, who has light brown hair and green eyes, have always been attracted to each other but they're from two different worlds so nothing ever came of their attraction. Her status as housemaid at the family home, Ironwood Park, gets upgraded to lady's companion to his younger sister, Esme, who's nineteen.

I feel for Sarah because she's in love with a man she can't have, or so she thinks, because he's obligated to marry someone from his realm. After they begin a sexual relationship with each other, they fall in love but he's being blackmailed into marrying someone and has to end their affair. But don't worry, Sarah and Simon have their happily ever after.

Halfway into the story it got real interesting for me when some upsetting revelations came about regarding the paternity of Simon's close family members. Also a major event happens with Sarah, a consequence that was bound to happen, and some character named Robert was brought in to help deal with that part of the storyline. I didn't like the addition of his character.

I was real disappointed that Simon's mother's disappearance wasn't resolved but it continues into the next in the series, The Rogue's Proposal, out in November.

Overall I really liked this, more so during the second half after their relationship ended and I'm dying to know what happened to his mother.

A MURDER AT ROSAMUND'S GATE

PUBLISHER: Minotaur, 4/2013
GENRE: Historical Fiction/Mystery
SETTING: England, 1665
SERIES: A Lucy Campion Mystery, book 1
AUTHOR SITE: link
MY GRADE: C

SYNOPSIS: For Lucy Campion, a seventeenth-century English chambermaid serving in the household of the local magistrate, life is an endless repetition of polishing pewter, emptying chamber pots, and dealing with other household chores until a fellow servant is ruthlessly killed, and someone close to Lucy falls under suspicion. Lucy can't believe it, but in a time where the accused are presumed guilty until proven innocent, lawyers aren't permitted to defend their clients, and--if the plague doesn't kill the suspect first--public executions draw a large crowd of spectators, Lucy knows she may never find out what really happened. Unless, that is, she can uncover the truth herself.

Determined to do just that, Lucy finds herself venturing out of her expected station and into raucous printers' shops, secretive gypsy camps, the foul streets of London, and even the bowels of Newgate prison on a trail that might lead her straight into the arms of the killer.

MY THOUGHTS: This is the first book in a new series by a debut author. The second paragraph of the synopsis makes this story sound much more interesting than it really was. I was so excited to read this and it had a lot of potential. Not a whole lot of sleuthing going on with the eighteen-year old protagonist, Lucy. She did a tiny amount of it but not nearly enough as the synopsis would have you believe.

Lucy's friend and fellow maid, Bessy, was murdered at Rosamund's Gate, which is a Lover's Lane-type place. She's two years older than Lucy. Someone very close to Lucy was arrested for it and there was a short trial.

The plot is interesting but it was slow moving for the duration and took a nosedive when the author brought in a plague subplot that lasted too long. I desperately wanted the author to get back to the murder mystery. The whole story ended up being very bland until the ridiculous ending. The story jumped ahead almost a year before we found out who the killer was. Unlike some readers I never guessed early on who the killer was.

Despite being very disappointed in this book I would like to read the next in the series because I like Lucy.

THE BUTTERFLY SISTER by Amy Gail Hansen

PUBLISHER: William Morrow 8/2013
GENRE: Contemporary Mystery
SETTING: Illinois & Wisconsin, USA
AUTHOR SITE: link
MY GRADE: D

SYNOPSIS: Twenty-two-year-old Ruby Rousseau is haunted by memories of Tarble, the women's college she fled from ten months earlier, and the painful love affair that pushed her to the brink of tragedy.

When a suitcase belonging to a former classmate named Beth arrives on her doorstep, Ruby is plunged into a dark mystery. Beth has gone missing, and the suitcase is the only tangible evidence of her whereabouts.

Inside the bag, Ruby discovers a tattered copy of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own, the book she believes was a harbinger of her madness. Is someone trying to send her a message--and what does it mean?

The search for answers leads to Tarble. As Ruby digs into Beth's past, she has no choice but to confront her own--an odyssey that will force her to reexamine her final days at school, including the married professor who broke her heart and the ghosts of illustrious writers, dead by their own hand, who beckoned her to join their tragic circle.

But will finding the truth finally set Ruby free . . . or send her over the edge of sanity?

MY THOUGHTS: This story sounded so unique but turned out to be uninteresting and farfetched. I stared to lose interest early on shortly after the suitcase was delivered to Ruby. Most of the plot was about Ruby's past professor-turned-boyfriend Mark from a year before. She goes to a college reunion and we, the reader, get dragged through implausible situations, right until the end. I was really annoyed at all the suicide/attempted suicide attempts revolving around Mark. It's was overkill and made me roll my eyes. No way could one person, in his case Mark, attract that many unstable women.

Virginia Barnard's letter to her dead sister in the epilogue did make me smile even though the stuff involving Virginia isn't likely to ever happen. Virginia's on a quest to repeat her past in a new setting- a hospital. Sounds like a set-up for a sequel but there's not to be one.

Not a good book and I can't recommend it to anyone. The embossed cover is beautiful though!

LADY ANNE'S LOVER by Maggie Robinson

PUBLISHER: Brava, 8/2013
GENRE: Historical Romance
SETTING: Wales, 1820/21
SERIES: The London List, book 3
PURCHASE: link
AUTHOR SITE: link
MY GRADE: C

FROM PUBLISHER: Lady Imaculata Anne Egremont has appeared in the scandalous pages of the London List often enough. The reading public is so bored with her nonsense, she couldn't make news now unless she took a vow of chastity. But behind her naughty hijinks is a terrible fear. Its time the list helped her. With a quick scan through its job postings and a few whacks at her ridiculous name, she's off to keep house for a bachelor veteran as plain Anne Mont.

Major Gareth Ripton-Jones is dangerously young and handsome on the face of it, but after losing his love and his arm in short order, he is also too deep in his cups to notice that his suspiciously young housekeeper is suspiciously terrible at keeping house. Until, that is, her sharp tongue and her burnt coffee penetrate even his misery - and the charm underneath surprises them both. Trust the worst cook in Wales to propose a most unexpected solution to his troubles...

MY THOUGHTS: I'm sorry to say this was a letdown. It started out interesting enough. The heroine, nineteen year old, red-haired, hazel-eyed Imaculata aka Anne/Annie, is escaping her father, who's tried to molest her for the past four years, since her mother died. She flees England for Wales and is employed by the hero, dark haired, blue-eyed Gareth, thirty-three.

Gareth is an alcoholic who lost part of his left arm after it wouldn't heal properly after he broke it. People also think he's guilty of killing his lover, Bronwen. She was raped and strangled. He's also destitute and Anne comes along at the right time- he's about to lose his home.

Anne comes up with a plan to help them both out of a bad situation. They say I love you far too soon and marry too soon. Once the plan is decided upon I lost interest in them (it happened so early on) but not in finding out who really killed Bronwen. That subplot was desperately needed because the main story wasn't enough to hold my interest. Everything just went too fast with them and there was nothing left for the author to talk about.

Both lead characters were likable and there was no conflict, which I feel is necessary. I hate when they get along so well right from the start. We learned nothing about Gareth before he went off to war. I need backstory on Gareth that goes back more than a year, which was how long it had been since he'd lost part of his arm. The only thing we learned about his past was Bronwen, who turned out to be a not so great person. We learned nothing about his childhood.

The author switches between calling the heroine Anne and Annie far too often. I also didn't like his cousin Ian at all nor the cast of characters who were involved with the wedding. I think he was written into the story for one reason only.

The ending with her father was so unbelievable that it left me shaking my head. The story could have been so much better, darker and deeper, what with the alcoholic hero and almost-molested heroine. That dark subject matter wasn’t handled well at all. The story just ended up being bland.

Please see my old interview with Maggie here.

AFTER PORN ENDS Documentary

I stumbled upon this great documentary on ex-porn actors who were at the top during the 80's and 90's. Some of the ones interviewed are Asia Carrera (Mensa member!), Nina Hartley, Mary Carey, Houston, Crissy Moran, Randy West, Richard Pacheco, John Leslie, Amber Lynn, Seka, Raylene, Bill Margold, Shelley Lubben, Tiffany Million.

It was released in the U.S. in May 2012 and appears to be an Amazon Instant Video only, no DVD. It's not rated but isn't too graphic. It's pretty good and I know of most of the people interviewed. I give it a solid B.

TIGER’S EYE by Karen Robards

PUBLISHER Avon, 1989
GENRE: Historical Romance
SETTING: England, 1814
AUTHOR SITE: link
MY GRADE: A+

SYNOPSIS: Lady Isabella St. Just is shocked to learn the identity of the daring champion who comes to her aid -- for the man who rescues her from desperate felons is none other than Alec Tyron, the notorious king of London's underworld. Now she is beholden to an outlaw who is respected and feared throughout the city and stunned by her own intense desire for this dark man of mystery. Fate has united these strangers from opposite lives -- the beautiful aristocrat and the brazen criminal outlaw. And now that the flame has been lit, no power on Earth will quench the fire of their passion...or destroy a love that society cannot allow.

SPOILER SUMMARY: Isabella is twenty-three and in a loveless marriage to Bernard. Her mother is dead and her father doesn't seem to liker her at all, especially after remarrying years before. She's out in her carriage one day and is kidnapped and held captive at an inn. The kidnappers plan to kill her. After escaping through the window she meets Alec and his friend Paddy. They help her hide out at a brothel Alec owns.

Alec (golden hair/golden eyes) grew up on the streets and doesn't know his parents. He's twenty-eight. He met Paddy and Pearl along the way and has maintained a lifelong friendship with both. Pearl has been his lover the whole time.

Pearl runs a brothel that Alec owns and ends up getting very jealous of Alec and Isabelle's relationship. There's an unrelated subplot of someone trying to kill Alec at the brothel. Alec discovers that Isabelle's husband is behind her kidnapping but she doesn't believe him. Alec won't take her home so, with Pearl's help, she leaves for home without Alec's knowledge. She can't get inside the house and Alec finds her at a restaurant and persuades her to come live with him at his home and help him become a gentleman by tutoring him.

After three months of Isabelle being away from her husband, Pearl's jealousy has reached it limit and she informs Bernard of where Isabelle is, knowing full well that he's already tried to kill Isabelle. She's out walking one day and is kidnapped by Bernard. They travel home and with her father and stepmother, travel to France and stay for awhile, in case there's any scandal caused Isabelle, a married woman, being away from her husband for three months.

Alec discovers what Pearl has done and tracks Isabelle down at a party in France. She tells him she has to stay with her husband and Alec leaves with his feelings hurt. He's already told Isabelle he loves her. Three months later, still in Paris, Bernard goes up to Isabelle outside and starts talking to her, telling her he poisoned his first wife Lydia and that's what killed her, not a 'weak heart'. He grabs her hand and tried to pull her toward the cliff but she resists. He smashes her in the head with a rock twice and Alec shows up and pulls a gun on him. Bernard asks him who he is then realizes he must be the one Isabelle was with for the three months she was away. He moves toward Alec and Alec shoots and kills him. Isabelle's father and stepmother happened to see what happened and now, after she was almost killed by Bernard again he believes her original story about Bernard trying to kill her.

Her father learns from Alec that for the whole three months she's been back with Bernard Alec has had men watching her and even had one working in the house because he was scared Bernard would try to kill her again. Alec leaves for England. Three months later Isabella shows up at the brothel. He's in the tub and she tells him she loves him and they decide to get married. She gets in the tub with him.

MY THOUGHTS: This is one of my top favorite books of all-time and is one of the author's favorites. I first read it around 1995/96 after buying it at K-Mart. I'd only been reading novels for two or three years at that point. In fact, most of my favorites were read around that time.

Isabella is very likable. A little too meek and passive though. She should have gone back to England with Alec the first time, not hung around France for no reason. I'm a little surprised she cheated on her husband. She seems a little too straight and narrow to have done something like that.

Alec is just alpha enough for me. He's another child of the street who's made something of himself as a businessman. That's a common theme in these books, rags to riches.

Her father's a real piece of crap. When she first told him Bernard hired people to kill her he didn't believe her and even suggested to Bernard that he 'beat her' if he has to, anything to keep from getting divorced and having to deal with a scandal. He's sickening.

Adultery isn't extremely common in historical romances and I liked that about this one. The story was interesting from the very first page when Isabella was abducted at night on the highway. The plot was really good. I don't think I've ever read about a heroine almost getting murdered by her husband before in a historical romance. I like her first meeting with Alec when she escapes her captors. There's also an exciting part when they're staying at an inn after someone tries to kill Alec at the brothel and they're still after him. Turns out Alec bought a home from someone and he's angry that he lost his home in the first place, so he's out to kill Alec. That reason is lame but it's fun and interesting to read about his murder attempts and try to figure out the who and why of it.

There weren't any slow or boring parts to me in this story. Unlike in some romances, Alec and Isabella's love was believable but I don't like that she didn't go with him back to England after her murder attempt.

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 1978 Film- Spoiler Summary

If you've never heard of this American rape revenge film from 1978, let me fill you in briefly. It's a story of a woman, Jennifer Hills, played by Camille Keaton, who is raped multiple times by four men. She gets revenge on all four. It was filmed over six weeks in 1976 but not released until 1978. This film is inspired by true events that happened in October 1974. Read more about that after the spoiler summary. Click on links in the summary to see photos from that scene.

SPOILER SUMMARY: Jennifer is a writer from New York. She's on her way to a cottage in the New York countryside on Park Hill Lane to work on her first novel but stops first for gas. Johnny, played by Eron Tabor, who now goes by Ron Shetler, is the attendant. Later Matthew delivers groceries to her house. Matthew goes and tells the other guys that he saw her 'tits'.

Jennifer's laying in a hammock writing, mere feet away from the river. The river is just behind the cabin. Here come Johnny and his three friends, Stanley, Andy, and Matthew, in a motorboat to harass her. She's watching them as they stare back at her. She's in bed reading one night (the same night?) and hears someone whistling. She goes outside to investigate but doesn't see anyone. She's sunbathing in a canoe in the same river and here comes two of them, Andy (German-born Gunter Kleemann) and Matthew (Richard Pace) in their motorboat. They circle her boat then tie a rope to her canoe and bring her to shore with them. Out jumps Johnny, wearing those awful coveralls. He's wearing them in every scene. He pulls down her bikini top, pushes her down as she's trying to get away and has Andy and Stanley pull her legs apart so he can pull her bikini bottoms off. He calls Matthew over (Matthew's supposed to be mental slow) to rape her first. He won't do it so Johnny rapes her. Afterward, she crawls away, stumbles, gets up and calls them 'bastards!' while she's walking away.

While walking naked through the woods, having just been raped, she encounters Andy sitting on a rock and playing the harmonica. The others are there too. They carry her over to a rock, lay her on it face down and Andy rapes her anally while the others are holding her limbs down. His acting during the rape is terrible. You should see his overly dramatic body movements. During her rape Stanley and Johnny grin. Johnny and Stanley leave, leaving Andy leaning his ass against a tree while pulling his pants up. She's left alone on the rock. She slides off the rock, gets up and crawls away. All four of the men get in their boat and leave, taking her canoe with them. They throw her bikini in the water.

Jennifer's covered in blood and collapses in her yard. She's inside the house wearing a robe, shivering terribly and is crawling over to the telephone to call the police. She puts it to her ear and Stanley kicks the phone out of her hand and she screams. She crawls away and Stanley drags her over to him and kicks her in the face, Johnny smoking and smirking as he and the other two watch. Matthew is now raping her. He's saying, 'I can't come! I can't come! You're interrupting my concentration. I can't finish like that!'

Andy picks up her manuscript, reads some of it aloud and they make fun of it. Stanley goes over to her. He straddles her torso as she's laying there. He's wearing the same brown pants throughout the film. She says, 'I'm hurt. Please, I'm hurt. I'll do it to you with my hand. You'll like it, you'll see.' He says, 'Total submission. That's what I like in a woman. Total submission.' He reaches behind him with his left hand, the hand that's holding a green wine bottle, inserts it in her and she screams. He straddles her face and says, 'Suck it, bitch! I said you're gonna suck it!' He calls her a bitch and a whore and smacks her repeatedly. The guys are yelling at him, telling him he's wasting his time. He says she's laying there like a mannequin and kicks her a few times.

They all leave her and are about to get into their boat when Johnny says they can't let her go. He gives Matthew a knife and tells him to go back and kill her. He refuses. Johnny tells him to never come back and calls him a 'dumb turkey'. Matthew cries and Johnny calls him back over to him. He demonstrates how to stab her and gives Matthew the knife. Matthew goes into her house. She's laying there where they left her. He wipes the blade of the knife in the blood on her face then goes back out to the guys. They assume he's killed her. She's in the tub on her hands and knees, covered in blood, shower spraying down on her.

I guess it's the same or next day when she's piecing together her torn up manuscript and retyping it. Two weeks later the three guys are at a diner. Johnny says its been two weeks and they haven't heard anything about her death and that someone should have smelled her body by now. They drive by her house in their boat and see her sitting in the grass, back against a tree, near the lake. She obviously sees them. They beat the crap out of Matthew for not killing her. Johnny runs him off on his bike, threatening to 'bust his ass' if he sees him again.

She's loading a gun that was already in the dresser drawer (the producer rented it) when she moved in. She goes to church to pray for forgiveness for the revenge she's about to dish out. Same day, she's parked near the gas station spying on Johnny. She sees a car parked by him and his two little kids are out talking to him. Next, she's parked outside the grocery store where Matthew works as a bicycle delivery man. She calls and orders some items and wants them delivered to her home. Matthew is told to deliver them, recognizes the address and is terrified to have to see her. He takes the knife that's laying near the bag of groceries and two huge pieces of cheese, (there's a fly on one of them) puts it in the waistband of his jeans and leaves.

He shows up sporting a black eye from the beating Johnny gave him. She comes out from behind a tree, tells him he got there 'super fast' and walks into the woods, hoping he'll follow. He's scared shitless and is carrying the knife he stole from work. He finds her leaning against a tree. He tells her he hates her, she's ruined his life, all the while holding up the knife. She strips off her semi-sheer white robe/gown and tells him she could have given him a summer to remember. She kneels down and pulls his pants down. She lays back and he gets on top of her. They kiss and as he's humping her she reaches to her right side, picks up a noose and puts it around his neck, him not seeming to notice. She pulls the rope, strings him up and he dies. As he's hanging there she pushes him until the rope comes loose from the tree and he falls into the water. She pushes his bike and bag of groceries into the water. She calls the store and tells them its been an hour and her groceries haven't been delivered.

She goes to the gas station. Johnny comes out and tells her they're closed and were only open a half day since it's Sunday. She starts playing with her hair from the driver's seat and with her head, motions for him to get in. They drive down a dirt road, they get out and she forces him to get naked (you can see his balls from behind when he's leaning forward to take his clothes off and I enjoyed it.)

As he's getting naked he proceeds to tell her that she asked for what she got from them because she exposed her 'damn sexy legs' to him at the gas station when they first met and she exposed her 'tits' to Matthew (which isn't true). She lets him take the gun out of her hand. He throws it and pulls her down to him. She caresses his face and says she'll give him a hot bath. They're in her bathroom. He's in the tub, she's naked, pinning her hair up while talking to him. We see him in the mirror. She gets in the tub facing him and is massaging his neck. He tells her that Matthew has been missing since the day before. She tells him she's killed him and that they had sex and Matthew 'came'. She says that because in the previous scene when Matthew was raping her he was telling the other guys that he couldn't come. He laughs and tells her she's got 'one fantastic imagination'.

She's giving him a hand job in the tub while she's telling him all that. While his eyes are closed, she reaches down beside the tub and gets a knife from under a yellow towel. She cuts his penis off. She calmly puts her robe on, leaves the bathroom and locks it from the outside. He's screaming, saying he can't stop the bleeding. She goes in the living room, buttons her robe/gown while looking back at the bathroom door, puts on an opera record and sits in a rocking chair. He finally stops speaking and she burns his clothes in the fireplace. She cleans the bathroom and what a mess it is. We see a quick flash of where his body is.

Johnny's wife and kids are at the gas station looking for him. Andy and Stanley are there getting yelled at by his wife. She thinks they know where he is. She tells them to 'get the fuck outta here!' and says she'll 'break their goddamn heads' if they come back around there.

Stanley and Andy get in their boat and head to Jennifer's. I think they're suspicious of her because now two of the four men have disappeared. She's in the hammock again. Just Stanley's in the boat and Andy's hiding behind a tree with an axe. The boat stops and Jennifer swims over to it and gets in, surprising Stanley because he didn't even know she was there. I think she tells Stanley that he's the one she wanted, leans in like she's about to kiss him and pushes him in the water. She starts the boat and drives in circles around Stanley to scare him. When she's far away from Stanley Andy swims over to him and helps him swim to shore. Jennifer drives over to them, axe raised high, and puts his axe into Andy's back. Still in the boat, she's near Stanley. She turns the boat off. He's holding on to the engine, telling her he didn't want to rape her. She quotes his earlier words by saying, 'Suck it, bitch!', starts the engine, the blades cut him up and she drives off into the sunset, having now murdered the last of four rapists.

DVD COMMENTARY WITH MEIR ZARCHI

I'll start with the awful event that inspired Meir to make this film. Part of this info is from this video at MovieWeb with Meir and the rest is from his own commentary:

On a rainy New York Sunday in October 1974 Meir, his eight year old daughter Tammy, and Meir's friend Alex Pfau (he's from Poland and died from a heart attack when he was 63) were driving to a nearby high school to use the running track. It was about 6 PM. On the way there they cut through Goose Pond Park ( I think it must have been renamed). Alex saw a naked girl come out from the bushes about 40 feet from them. They got out of the car and rushed over to her. She was muddy. They asked her what happened and with a broken jaw she told them she'd been raped and beaten by two men. Alex put his parka on her, they put her in the car, drove Tammy home then took the girl to the police station. While there, the officer didn't seem to be concerned about the girl. She said she was eighteen or nineteen. The officer asked her why she was in the park in the first place. That angered Meir and he yelled and banged on the desk and they took her to the hospital.

Later he learned that she'd been taking a shortcut through the park to get to her boyfriend's house. She was grabbed from behind, they took her eyeglasses off, punched her and dragged her into the bushes. They ripped her clothes off, yelling, 'Shut up, bitch, or we'll kill you!' and took turns raping, beating, and sodomizing her. One put a knife to her throat and she begged him to not kill her, telling him she couldn't even see them well because she wasn't wearing her glasses. They left her there, taking her clothes and glasses with them.

She was in intensive care for about a week. A female officer contacted Meir and said the girl's father wanted to know if he could have his and Alex's address so he could send them thank you cards. Both men got a card from her parents, dated October 7, 1974, that read:

Dear Sir,

My wife and myself would like to express our heartfelt thanks for kindness (inaudible) help that you have rendered to our daughter after she was so viciously attacked by the two animals that must have come down from the trees. Thank God that our daughter is coming along nicely. The swelling's subsided and she can now eat. The police have a number of suspects but have not as yet with any arrests. Again, our deepest thanks.

Respectfully,

Names Withheld

I wrote down what he said verbatim but part of that letter doesn't make sense, like this, '...but have not as yet with any arrests.' I think he's actually going off memory.

They filmed six days a week, 10-14 hours a day, for six weeks with Wednesday being their day off.
Meir's two children are in this playing Johnny's children. They don't have speaking roles.
The town of Kent, Connecticut only had two gas stations and this was filmed at one of them.
The character of Matthew was modeled after a mentally challenged messenger who worked in Meir's office building.
The script took four months for him to complete. He worked on it to and from work while riding the subway in New York.
Camille (Jennifer) wore all of her own clothing in the film.
Meir placed ads in papers looking for one woman and four men in their 20's to be in a low budget film.
Camille told him that after high school she became an airline stewardess then moved to Italy to pursue acting.
Two other women were considered for the role. One was 6'2 and the other was so attractive as to be 'distracting.'
Six months after the film's completion, Camille won a best actress award at a festival in Spain.
The scene where Stanley and Andy harass Jennifer in the boat was filmed with no sound. The whole scene where they're chasing her before one of the rape's was shot with no sound too. During editing the boat motor sounds and dialogue was added.
Before the film, the actors playing Andy and Stanley had degrees in psychology and Gunter (Andy) had worked with emotionally disturbed children.
Gunter knew how to handle a motor boat and taught Camille how to use one in one day.
A lot of the men who auditioned were unwilling to be naked on camera while most women who auditioned were willing.
A male gaffer quit right before the rape scene on the rock was about to be filmed. He was tired of all the violence.
The female makeup artist quit at some point because she too had been gang raped in real life.
Camille's driving Meir's own car, a 1975 Dodge Aspen, which was only one year old at the time.
Matthew (Richard Pace) is almost 6' tall and 180 pounds.
Eron grew up on a ranch in Ontario, California. IMDB has a quote of him saying he grew up Mennonite.
The woman who was to play Johnny's wife got sick before filming so the script girl, I think is what Meir said she was, was asked to fill in minutes before filming.
Meir is seen from behind playing the piano (or pretending to) during the scene where Jennifer enters the church to pray.

THE VALUES OF VENGEANCE: MEIR ZARCHI REMEMBERS I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE

This is a great 28 minute documentary with Meir but too much to get into.

MY THOUGHTS: I like this film because it's so harsh and disturbing. It'll definitely leave some kind of lifelong impression on you. I believe it first came out on DVD in late 2002 with the Millennium Edition. I think it was that same year that I first saw it. I owned it on VHS. I can see why it was banned in certain countries.

I wish Camille had had more lines. She doesn't speak much throughout the whole thing. Most of her acting was done with facial expressions, which were well conveyed. I do think Eron does some really good acting in this. It's a shame he wasn't in more films and I wonder why that was.

Three of the men never acted after this. I think Eron/Ron did some theater and now owns his own company.

Meir's commentary was informative, if not extremely hard to understand because of his heavy accent, and Joe Bob's was slightly funny at times. Throughout the whole thing he kept calling Matthew a 'retard', which I find highly offensive, and called Johnny's wife Alexis fat and something like dumpy, which was totally uncalled for. He didn't say one negative thing about anyone else's appearance except hers.

This interview with Meir at MovieWeb is very good and informative and I suggest you watch it.

Both U.S. in-print versions of the original film, here, and the two disc version that has both the original 1978 and 2010 remake, have the same bonus features with Meir and Joe Bob Briggs. I assume the audio commentary with Meir and Joe Bob Briggs (two separate audio tracks) that's on the 2011 release was taken from the 2002 release. I own the double feature from 2012.

Here's a 2009 article about Gunter (Andy). Ron (Johnny) is a vocal coach with his own studio.

Meir has said several times that there's a real-life case where a woman was raped and later killed her rapists with a shotgun but I can't find any information about that online anywhere. I'm dying to know more about that. He never said when or where it took place. If you have some info on this please let me know!

Watch it here.
